If you've been unable to fill your ADHD prescription recently, you're not imagining it — and you're not alone.
The UK has experienced rolling shortages of ADHD medication since late 2023, and while the situation has improved for some formulations, others remain difficult to source. The Department of Health and Social Care has extended its Serious Shortage Protocol multiple times, allowing pharmacists to substitute alternative brands or dosages without requiring a new prescription.
Why is there a shortage?
The shortage is driven by a combination of factors: a dramatic increase in ADHD diagnoses (particularly among adults), global manufacturing constraints, and supply chain disruptions. The number of adults seeking ADHD assessment in the UK has increased by over 400% since 2020, driven in part by greater awareness through social media and the removal of stigma around neurodivergence.
Demand has simply outstripped supply — and pharmaceutical manufacturers have been slow to scale production.
What can you do if you're affected?
Speak to your pharmacist first — they may be able to source an alternative brand. Contact your prescriber if you've been without medication for more than a few days, as they may be able to adjust your prescription. And remember: medication is one tool in your toolkit, not the only one.
Coaching, strategies, and self-understanding continue to work even when the tablets don't arrive. This is exactly why building a broader support system matters — so you're never relying on a single point of failure.
